The Baltimore Orioles have suffered for the indignity of having a losing record for 14 consecutive seasons but they no longer have to suffer a boring hat emblem. The Bird is back and the Bird is the word.
The Bird adorned the caps and uniforms of the Orioles in their glory days when they either dominated the AL East or were extremely competitive. Yes it is true that a hat logo cannot change the fortunes of a team but it cannot hurt.
I have a lot of Orioles jerseys, t-shirts, sweatshirts and caps along with that of their AAA farm team the Norfolk Tides. My favorite items from the Orioles have always included the retro bird logo. I think this is because my first Orioles cap was one that I got back in the early 1970s when the Stockton Ports were affiliated with the Orioles. It was hat night and the giveaway hat was a black Orioles hat with the classic cartoon logo. I wore that hat out.
The Orioles are also bringing back the alternate home orange jersey last used by the team in 1992 and still a favorite among fans. It will be their Saturday jersey to go along with their alternate home black jersey which is worn on Friday nights. All Orioles uniforms will include a commemorative patch of Camden Yards 20th anniversary.
Now it will certainly take a lot more from Manager Buck Showalter and new GM Dan Duquette to bring the Orioles back to being a competitive force in the AL East. However if they can bring back the iconic Bird then maybe they will be allowed to remake the O’s and turn their baseball fortunes around maybe just maybe the rest will follow. After all, the O’s did get things together enough at the end of the 2011 season to take 5 of 7 from the Red Sox and knock them out of the playoff picture.
Peace
