The Federal Army at Gettysburg had a wide variety of officers. Many senior officers were graduates of West Point but in the expansion of the Army and the call of up militia from the various states other officers were appointed.     Since I have been taking part in a Staff Ride at Gettysburg this weekend, which today finished at Little Round Top I am re-posting an article about three men that I admire, all academics who were instrumental in driving off the Confederate assault and probably saving the Union.
