I now officially hate WordPress. They disabled the classic editor and are making everyone use their stupid Block Editor. I hate it and ever since it was introduced we still had the ability to choose the classic editor. They now have a “slimmed down” classic editor option within the Block Editor. It makes posting an article and seeing what I want to do with my categories, tags and other info nearly impossible. To think I just paid for a new site with them to like to this in order to be able to publicize my book and have links that would enable me to connect to my publisher and major booksellers.
Damn them.
I actually had something very important to post tonight but I am too pissed off to do it. I have been with WordPress since 2009 and now they fuck me. Damn them. One of the things they said when I tried to post was “Change is hard.” How fucking arrogant and disrespectful. I have had to deal with too much damned change in my life over the past three months. I am exhausted. This was the straw that block this camels back.
I don’t know when I will post here again. I may find a different service and try to transfer content from here to it.

I feel your pain, Padre! Every week it seems that they change something else. I’m still managing to choose ‘Classic’ editor so I have the formatting features, plus my cats ‘n tags visible while I work, but I’m sure it’s a matter of time. I’ve looked into other hosting sites, but it doesn’t seem worth the change and I’ve worked long and hard to get the nearly 5,000 followers I have … I haven’t the energy to start over. If you do move to a different blog site, please let me know, for I don’t want to lose contact!
There’s a trick to using the classic editor. Put your title in the heading and a sentence in the body of the block editor. Then save as a draft. Go back to your Admin side; Posts, All. Your saved draft should be at top. Underneath the post where it has “edit” etc., is “classic editor”. Click there. A box will appear that asks if you want to continue with the Block or Classic. Choose Classic.
I almost retired completely from blogging when they forced the Block editor on us. Then I read on another blog how to work around it.
I will try that thank you. I am just so pissed at how hard they have made it to blog the way that I like.
I know. The block editor is intended for businesses. If we want to keep it simple, we have to purchase a package that allows it — or use the extra steps.
Once I learn something and get accustomed to it, I don’t like having forced changes.
I have been a follower/lurker/responses only guy for so long I can’t really identify. But I feel for ya since you do use it much.
Thanks to Xena for offering that trick to getting back to the Classic editor. I tried it, but I think that what has happened is that Wordoress have woken up to it and stopped that avenue. I am staying with WordPress, intil I can solve the problem. Trying to find a blog platform that is aligned to the needs of people ilike me. I am not out to make money. I am out for some real discussion. I have joined 2 sites – Medium and Wix. Medium looked promising in that it did not originally gear itself to BUSINESS. Wix will allow you to transfer your posts from WordPress. (But then does WordPress own Wix? I wouldn’t be surprised if it did)
I have been hearing this for months & months. One of my favorite blogs, “The Way Of Improvement Starts Here”, maintained by John Fea of Messiah College, just moved to Patreon … many other bloggers are moving to other platforms as well.
I personally don’t have a problem with the block editor … I mean, it’s a PITA but I can deal with it OK. But I don’t pay anything. If I was paying for this, I might have a different outlook.

Thank you. I am looking up different platforms. I will need something that I pay for that allows me to do what I need to advertise for the book, the YouTube channel I plan to set up, some articles, and things that I can make money from. It will take a while to get set up. I like Fea as well.

You have the old menu on the left.
Go to Posts.
You will see all the posts.
You can use classic editor there.
If you can’t figure it out, I will email you screenshots of how to get there.

I did. Whenever I went to all posts and when I went to it I was thrown back to the new version every time I tried, which was many times.
You have to go back to the old Admin menu and reselect classic editor…
I’m so sorry you are going through this. I have been bloggiing for 8 years now and WP always seems to change things without taking into account what users need/want.
I’ve been suing the ‘blocks’ for a while but didn’t know they were ‘imposed’ now!! May I say … takea breath!! We are here with you and would miss you if you stopped. Keep us posted!! Tight hug – if helpful!! 🙂

I moved to the block editor shortly after it became available. It works more like I do, especially as I’ve been constructing websites for two decades. I’ve had my WordPress blog since 2014 and it did take a month or so to get comfortable using the WordPress block editor, but I found the same issue when moving from driving a car with a manual gearbox to an automatic.
I understand why WordPress has made the move from a design and maintenance point of view. Ultimately it provides more features that can be incorporated into blogs that will work regardless of the template we choose while being more reliable and easier to maintain from a WordPress perspective. What I think they have failed miserably at doing is providing a good tutorial on how to make the best of it.
Man, I am with you. I can’t tell you how much I hate blocks, I just can’t see what the benefit of them is other than being really freakin’ annoying. One of things I’ve done at my blog besides my regular posts are some parody tunes, quite a few over the last few years, political ones, and I dread having to possibly edit any of the copy in those posts because it will completely fuck up all the spacing of my lyrics squashing everything together and I don’t know why. It doesn’t do that paragraphs in other posts. I with ya on the frustrations Steve.
You can also enter an URL directly to create a new post with the classic editor. For your blog, it should be:
https://padresteve.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?classic-editor
And for editing, on the Posts pages, hover with the mouse on the link to the post you want to edit and write down the ID in the URL : Something like https://wordpress.com/post/padresteve.com/. Then use the following URL for your blog:
https://padresteve.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=&action=edit&message=10&classic-editor
I don’t not know long this is still going to work but for now works for me.
The comment editor mangled my URL: IT should be
https://wordpress.com/post/padresteve.com/%5BID%5D
and https://padresteve.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=%5BID%5D&action=edit&message=10&classic-editor (ID for the post parameter)
I am having the same issues. Hell, all I wanna do is to have the text stay where I leave it. I try making a list and it looks fine. As soon as I save it, I come back and the text has scattered around. ALL I WANT IS A SIMPLE LIST where I don’t need space but wordpress won’t let me. It’s driving me crazy.
Even the classic they have now isn’t the same as it was when I first started ten years ago.
